THE REASON TO REFILL

Keep more of what still works.

Why we are designing around existing containers, sensible quantities, and shared routes—and what we still need to measure.

Less packaging is a design goal. Lower total impact is something we have to demonstrate across the whole service.

The food runs out. The container does not.

A jar can still have years of useful life when the rice inside it is gone. Our starting question is simple: can we replenish the food while keeping the container in use? In-home refilling is one way to try. Returning a shared container for another use is another.

EPA places source reduction and reuse ahead of recycling in its materials management hierarchy. That supports the direction of this design, but it does not prove that every refill service has a smaller footprint. PantryDay still needs supplier packaging, transport equipment, and a way to handle food responsibly.

Make the quantity fit the kitchen.

Buying in bulk does not have to mean storing bulk quantities at home. We want the shared supply to stay with the service while households choose what they expect to use. A little spice for a recipe or a smaller top-up of a slow-moving staple can be more useful than another standard package.

Our hypothesis is that flexible amounts and a clearer view of what is already on the shelf can help households avoid unwanted surplus. We have not measured a reduction in household food waste. Price, minimum orders, and the effort involved in a refill also affect whether this works in practice.

Look beyond the empty package.

The route matters. A shared delivery might replace several separate shopping trips, or it might add a trip that would not otherwise happen. The outcome depends on distance, vehicle use, how many households a route serves, and which errands people actually avoid.

Washing and return transport matter too. So do container breakage, loss, and the number of times each container gets used. UNEP describes a life-cycle approach that follows materials through production, use, and disposal. We want to apply that same whole-system thinking before describing a service as lower impact.

Measure the service we actually run.

Our proposed pilot scorecard includes packaging used per order, container returns and repeat uses, washing water and energy, route distance and delivered weight, and food lost within the service. We also want to ask households which trips a delivery replaced and whether their purchases were used.

Those observations should be compared with a clearly described alternative, with assumptions and limitations published alongside the results. Until that work exists, we are not claiming a percentage reduction in emissions, a zero-waste service, or a universal environmental advantage. Reuse is a direction for design and a question for evidence.
